This is a brilliant idea! I cried when I read his letter to his daughters. Perhaps this will motivate me because it's so easy to get caught up in the struggles of the day and forget that your children will only be like this for such a fleeting amount of time. What could be a better use of our time than to creat a way to remind our children who they were and how precious they have been at each stage. Thanks for the reminder!

OK, this is brilliant! We need this clock. My husband and I just talked about putting a clock in their room and setting an alarm. Actually, we did this with a Tomater clock from the movie, 'Cars' about two years ago, but the first time we set it, it went off at night, scared them both, and the clock literally could not be in their room any more! It was too scary. We got less sleep with the clock in their room.

Things were good for awhile, but lately we are waking very bleary-eyed. Our sleep situation has changed dramatically since Christmas when our 5-year-old daughter saw a scary nightmare before Christmas decoration on someone's lawn. She has been scared awake ever since. We now sleep with the door open, a night light, and all kinds of other devices that we have only needed for the last month. She wakes up in the middle of the night, sneaks into bed with us, and I don't often even know she is there until my 3-year-old son comes in somewhere between 4 or 5 and I end up putting them on top of each other. Accidentally. They whine. I whine. My husband whines. We are trying to get them back in their room. We are happier people when they come in AFTER 6 AM. If this clock can do that, I will sing its praises everywhere. Promise.

I LOVE this post. It's such a great reminder--and Kabat Zinn is just a wonderful author. My iPhone broke a couple of days ago, and the happy result is that I don't constantly check my email and Twitter every time I'm at a stop light. Safer, saner, and as a result, I'm not constantly tuning out the kids' zillion questions. My new year's resolution vis a vis my kids is to play more, and you can't do that if you aren't present. So it all works together!

I am so tired bc my husband and I are up at night worrying how we can afford to buy our children hanukah and christmas and birthday presents this month when we are both unemployed again. Been there before. Please, wouldn't it be great if we can't have jobs to wake up to get to, couldn't we please sleep a half hour later in the morning???? Seriously, my daughter has been begging me to get her a clock so she can wake herself up for school and my 5 year desperately wants to learn how to read time. This clock is like manna from heaven, that is, if we could afford it.

Boo Hoo.
