You have probably read Obama’s letter to his daughters, but if not, here’s the link below. We all know what a great writer he is, but how beautiful that he took the time to write a letter at this significant moment in their lives. Obama’s eloquence made me ask myself, when is that last time I wrote a letter, a real letter, by hand, with a pen, on nice paper to anyone? A letter full of sentiment and meaning, a letter that someone dear to me might keep and even read again?
On and off I have kept journals for my kids, of course my daughter, who was born first, has many more entries than her younger brother, the poor deprived second child. Obama has inspired me to write to them more often.
There’s a gorgeous paper store in town called Soolip, on Melrose, that sells the most elegant hand made cards- and paper. Each one is a work or art. I have a stack of pretty cards and papers I bought from there and am going to start a shoe box collection of letters for each of my kids. I may not match Obama’s eloquance, but my words will be from the heart. What would you write to your kids? If you are inspired send me a comment and I’ll publish it here.

This is a brilliant idea! I cried when I read his letter to his daughters. Perhaps this will motivate me because it’s so easy to get caught up in the struggles of the day and forget that your children will only be like this for such a fleeting amount of time. What could be a better use of our time than to creat a way to remind our children who they were and how precious they have been at each stage. Thanks for the reminder!
